Continuing the blog serialisation of my popular X-Pro Series lust/hate/love story:
Part 114: The X-Pro2 and the Forgotten Trip to Aveiro
Way back in October 2016 I needed a day out. My (now late) Father had been admitted to hospital and I was 1500 miles away. I was waiting to get news of if I needed to get to the UK ‘pronto’ or if it was all a bit of a false alarm…. (luckily it was a false alarm)
Some way to the south of Porto, is the canal town of Aveiro. The Venice of Portugal it’s know as…. I’m not sure about that… it’s not completely heaving with people and a coffee doesn’t cost £12 for one thing 🙂
I’d visited before, but I wanted to go back.
It was to be a solid day of solo photography.
But my mind wasn’t totally in the headspace and the light was harsh. I played around with a few of the many images I shot that day…
But I didn’t really feel them.
I still don’t in fact.
But sitting here on a dull grey Monday, the threat of rain looming… I was going through my archive and I found the Aveiro folder
I’ve had the X-Pro2 for a lot longer now, developed my PP style with its files and I thought I’d have another go with some of them.
So here’s ten shots from the forgotten trip to Aveiro
I travelled by train that day. Arriving early at the station I was greeted by gorgeous soft light.
By the time I’d reached my destination, the light had hardened into something akin to flick-knife wielding street thug 🙂
It’s a short walk from the railway station to the canals, and upon leaving the station you’re presented with the de facto (sic) Portuguese blue tiled buildings.
Growing up in a little middle England town, (not completely devoid of charm) I’m always captivated by the style of Portuguese buildings
Canal trips are available if you’re in a touristy mood!
I have taken one of these trips, many years ago before I lived in Portugal. Truth be told I’m a bit hydrophobic so they don’t really appeal
I decided to explore the path of the canals by foot. Taking in the colours and shapes that I found.
Visiting in October meant (well back in 2016 anyway) that tourist season had quietened considerably, which gave the place a still and calm vibe
This café bar is obviously geared up to cater for way more people than it was experiencing that day
If like me, you’re fond of street and like fairly timeless looking scenes, then (like most of Portugal) Aveiro’s got you covered.
Much like the buildings, the canal boats of Aveiro are beautifully decorated
Unlike Venice, Aveiro is a fully covered by roads – the canals are literally an accompanying transport system, running side by side with more mainstream ways to travel
It’s been over 18 months since I went to Aveiro.
My mind wasn’t totally in the headspace and the light was harsh.
I suspect it’s high time that I went back.
