Continuing the blog serialisation of my popular X-Pro Series lust/hate/love story:
Part 147: Re-Cross My Path!
Waaaay back when (here in fact) I went for a long walk and shared with you all the pictures I took that day.
Keeping with the last article’s theme of revisiting older image with Capture One Express (C1E), I decided to do just that with this set of images.
This won’t be so much of a C1E Vs SilkyPix post, but more for my own (and hopefully your) curiosity.
So as ever with these things we’ll look at the original images alongside the new C1E edits and see what we think.

In the shots above, to my eye at least, the C1E is far more alive with sparkle and pop!

In these two monochrome shots, I think that there’s little to split them, I seem to have made a better job with the highlights on the original SilkyPix edit!

Here the two editors have provided very different colours. I think it’s win some/lose some…. but I do prefer the skin tones on the SilkyPix edited image. YMMV

Here I think we see that the SilkyPix image has more natural colour, but the C1E image has more pop and shininess.

C1E here seems to offer a warmer looking image, but I’ve made a better job with the highlights on the SilkyPix image

These edits are fairly close, but again we see that C1E presents the photograph in a warmer looking way.

Personally I feel here that the default warmer look of the C1E edit doesn’t suit the subject as well as the darker colder look of the SilkyPix edit.

Of the two edits above the warmer more golden light of the C1E colour palette really shines!

In this scene I think the darker look of the SilkyPix edit better suits the monochrome conversion. YMMV.

In this pair I prefer the SilkyPix edit. The C1E edit is too bright and garish.

The C1E colours are more lifelike, but I prefer the warmer look of the light in the SilkyPix edit.

Another monochrome conversion, (again) we see that the SilkyPix edit is a little darker, I suspect it has more visual impact because of the heavier tones.
These types of exercise are all very well and good, but what exactly did we observe?
Yet again I’m taken back by just how much of a difference the editor used can affect the look of the image, and it’s not as clear cut as everything from C1E looks better. There is for me at least, on some images various aspects of the C1E “look” that I wish the SilkyPix edits had and vice versa.
This all serves to reinforce that there is pros and cons to all of the many RAW convertors that are available to us, and that it’s worth running images through different tools in order to see the results and to try different techniques.
I’m still enamoured with the general look of C1E edits, but that’s not to say that I always like the look of the colours or the highlights.
When viewed in isolation, I love the look that C1E makes with my Fuji files, but when compared and contrasted with my older SilkyPix edits I’m reminded of what I like about those edits too and I’m curious to try and incorporate the aspects I like from the SilkyPix look into my C1E workflow
It was a very long walk I took that day in early 2017. It’s nice to know that even two years later I’m still getting the benefit of the photos.
